IRS 990-N
Line Divider

Due Date: 15th Day of the 5th Month after the end of your Fiscal Year (varies from Chapter to Chapter, see table below)
Online/Paper: Online, via IRS/Urban Institute, forward confirmation email to Roger Hawks for credit.
Extensions Granted: NO

The IRS 990-N is a Federal requirement. It provides information to the IRS that confirms the Chapter should be tax exempt. Not filling this report for 3 consecutive years will results in your Chapter losing its tax exempt status, which means you'd have to file a long form tax form, all income (including fees) would be taxable, and you'd have to pay upwards of $300 to reinstate the tax exempt status.

To avoid losing your tax exempt status, HQ is requiring Chapters to forward confirmation of having filed this report.

How to: (Click on images to enlarge.)

Step 1
Visit HQ's info page on the IRS 990-N. It's a great starter page where you'll find links and your EIN. You may also find it helpful to retrieve information from the previous year's Financial Report (available on the Online System.)
Step 2
The e-Postcard is filed online here. Your Chapter may have a login ID (if you have a Chapter email), otherwise, you may have to create a new account. If you do, use a Chapter email so that the login ID and credentials are reusable.
Step 3
Once you're logged on, you can fill out the report. You'll use the information you gathered above. It is recommended that you use an Advisor as the "Principal Officer," since they typically don't change from year to year. Submit the report once you've filled it completely.
Step 4

You will receive a confirmation email; forward this to Roger and Rebecca, for full credit. If you've filed and cannot find the confirmation email, other forms of evidence are acceptable, as long as you send them to HQ before the end of the year. Ask Josuan or HQ for help.
